In The Spotlight

Roswell – “Can’t Take My Soul”

Based in London, this Americana duo of multi-instrumentalists Jasmine Watkiss and ZoĆ« Wren got together after a mutual friend invited them for coffee and pushed them to sing in an outdoor food market in Cambridgeshire. This led to them performing together at open mic nights. They’ve supported Catherine McGrath and Dea Matrona and played festivals all over Europe. Likened to First Aid Kit, Fleetwood Mac and the Indigo Girls, they released their debut “Heaven Knows in 2018.

Singing about defiance, self-acceptance and patriarchal and capitalist pressure, their new single may have some heavy lyrics, but they are balanced with a joyous Americana melody. Easing us into the song, they start with a mellow acoustic guitar, before adding a joyful vitality in the zesty chorus. With an exhilarating percussion, layered guitars and multi-vocal backing voices forging an invigorating soundscape, it’s their tight harmonies that take this bustling tune to mirthful heights.
