In The Spotlight

Marfa – “American Lonely”

Forged in Colorado, this Americana duo, comprising of Bryce Menchaca and Kellen Wall, met in 2021 as music students at CU Denver, where they ended up in a songwriting circle together. Despite a difference in musical tastes, they started writing songs together, but began posting covers on TikTok. Since then they’ve played venues like the Skylark Lounge and the Aurora Borealis Festival. Inspired by 70s country-pop artists like Glen Campbell and America, they debuted with “66” in 2024.

Written in the aftermath of the L.A. wildfires, their new single tries to capture the unimaginable heartbreak and loneliness that impacted so many people. Wrapped in a serene nostalgia from the 70s-touched melody, it’s the laid-back warmth from the guitars and the understated rhythm that gets this song going. Later filling the instrumentation with more body, it’s their velveteen harmonies and exquisite electric guitar solo that make this wistful, West-Coast-dipped groove sound timeless.
