The California Honeydrops – “365 Flavors”

Formed in Oakland in 2007, this genre-defying soul band got their start busking on the streets and inside subway stations. Consisting of Lech Wierzynski, Benjamin Malament, Yanos ‘Johnny Bones’ Lustig, Lorenzo Loera and Beaumont Beaullieu, they’ve become a staple on the music festival circuit, having played New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and North Sea Jazz to name but a few. Inspired by Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong, they debuted with “Soul Tub!” in 2008.

Celebrating finding the person you feel is ‘the one’, their new single is about finding all the variety, excitement and fulfilment you need in a single partner. Singing about discovering something new every single day of the year, this song creates an authentic analog sound and blends classic Stax soul and Motown R&B. With a tight percussion, bright guitars and warm vintage organ, it’s the punchy horn section and raspy, falsetto vocals that make this vibrant tune a feel-good groove.

Quinn DeVeaux & The California Honeydrops – “Very Best Thing”

Born in Gary, Indiana, this soulster was raised on 80’s R&B and classic rock. However his grandmother was a jazz singer, while his uncle was booking shows for the likes of Howlin’ Wolf and opened his ears to the blues of Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters. After moving to San Fransisco, he’d expanded to legends like Bill Whithers and Al Green. He released his debut EP “This Could Be Yours” in 2018.

Enlisting the rich sound of R&B/blues band The California Honeydrops, his new single encompasses all that is good of classic soul. From the warm bass line and the crisp guitars to the retro organ and blazing horns, this 60s-dipped tune sounds like an unexpected find in a dusty Stax or Motown vault. And with his retro-touched, yearning vocal might, this vintage groove is bursting with true passion and soul.
